History
Department/subject info and philosophy:
The intent of History at Hinde House is that students access a range of historical knowledge and concepts through enquiry questions. These enquiries, which have been posited by historians drive the learning journey and gives students a chance to engage with historical thinking at both a local and global level.
Some example enquiries:
- "Until the lions have their own historians, the history of the hunt will always glorify the hunter.” (African Proverb) How far is this true?
- ‘The personal is political’ (Carole Hanisch) How far do you agree. Theme: Democracy. Concept: Change over time
- Do societies always promise more than they can deliver? (Stavrianos). Theme: Migration. Concept: Diversity
- ‘To put the gun down sometime you have to pick the gun up’ (Malcolm X). Theme: Dissent Concept: Change over time

Year 7
• Historical skills
• Local study – Cartimandua and the Brigantes
• Norman conquest
• Life in Medieval England
• Medieval monarchs
Year 8
• Local study - How far was Sheffield involved in the slave trade.
• Liberty, protests and rebellions (thematic study over time and countries)
• Empire and rule
Year 9
• WW1
• Germany in transition 1919-1939
Programme of study Y10-Y11:
Year 10
• The Elizabethan Age, 1558-1603
• Changes in health and medicine in Britain, c500 to the present day
Year 11
• The development of the USA 1929 2000
GCSE/BTEC Exam information:
The exam board we follow is WJEC Eduqas GCSE in HISTORY.
Grading system is 9-1.
