Department/subject info and philosophy:

Design Technology

Technology is an exciting subject that has links across the whole curriculum, be it maths, science, history, art, English or geography. Our aim is to help develop our young people in to informed consumers, independent problem solvers, designers and the engineers of the future.

Programme of study in Y7-Y9:

In Technology, a range of units are covered to develop skills, knowledge and understanding needed to be successful at GCSE level.

  • Year 7 – technical drawing and presentation skills
  • Year 8 – materials theory and mini practical tasks
  • Year 9 – Block bot project (woodwork and accuracy)

Across KS3, students also study food preparation and textiles

Programme of study Y10-Y11:

Currently students can opt for the Design Technology GCSE or Food Technology Qualification

GCSE/BTEC Exam information:

GCSE AQA Design Technology (8552)

50% Exam
50% Non-Examined Assessment (coursework)
The making of a product is 10% of the final overall grade.

Food Technology - Food preparation and Nutrition

Program of Study Year 7- The Eatwell Project

Pupils will learn how to cook a range of dishes safely and hygienically and apply their knowledge of healthy eating.

Program of Study Year 8 - Diet and health

Pupils will develop their cooking skills further and apply their knowledge of nutrition. In addition they will consider the factors that affect food choice, food availability and food waste.

Program of Study Year 9  - Science and skills

Pupils will build and apply their cooking skills to create high quality nutritious dishes. Pupils will apply principles of food science and demonstrate their understanding of functions of ingredients in a range of dishes.

Program of Study Year 10/11 - GCSE Food preparation and nutrition OCR (J309)

The course contents are based on the following four components:

  • Nutrition
  • Food (food provenance and food choice)
  • Cooking and food preparation
  • Skills requirements (preparation and cooking techniques)

GCSE/BTEC Exam information: GCSE Food preparation and nutrition OCR (J309)

In Year 11 pupils will sit a written exam 1Hr 30 50%

They will also complete NEA ( Non exam assessment) tasks.

NEA 1 Food investigation task 15%

NEA 2 Food preparation task 35%
