Science in Space

In March, a group of fifteen Year 7 students visited Manchester Museum of Science and Industry as part of a science reward trip. Students took part in a material science workshop where they explored the uses and implications of science in space.

They used special wireless microscopes, connected to iPads to

examine amazing ‘wonder materials’ used during space travel,

including camel hair, aluminium foam and graphene. They were

then set a creative task to design new applications and products

for these materials and took part in a Dragon’s Den’s style

sales-pitch. Congratulations to Hamnah, Renee, Ellie, Saif and

William for their winning proto-type! After the design workshop,

the students explored the rest of the museum, including the

engine room power house, a textiles manufacturing demo and

an exhibit about Tim Peake’s Soyuz space capsule, where they

found out more about his assent and descent from space and

how the capsule travels through space.

The students had a great, fun day out – they conducted

themselves in an exemplary manner and were praised by the

workshop leader as one of the most innovative groups he had
